Fallen

“Taro, look at me.” Ryuu’s hand on my arm urges me to turn around.

When I focus on his chest, his finger nudges my chin up until I meet his gaze. The sadness and pity I see there makes me flinch away from him. “I don’t want you to look at me like that.”

“How can I not be sad when you’re in pain?” He reaches for me again, and I slap his hands away. Undeterred, he yanks me against his chest, his arms around mine to hold me still. “Tell me what the police are doing to catch this asshole.”

“Nothing,” I mumble into the cotton of his t-shirt.

He squeezes me tighter. “I don’t believe that.”

Huffing, I bite his shoulder, and he flinches back instinctively. Free, I wrap my arms around myself to hug my elbows. “They’re checking up on him, making sure he’s staying put.”

Ryuu rubs his collarbone, where red teeth marks show above the black of his shirt. “Where is he right now?”

“A couple cities away.” I shrug. “I didn’t ask for specifics.”

“We need to find out exactly where so we don’t go there and risk running into him.” Ryuu claps his hands together. “When was the last time he contacted you?”

I nibble my lip. “He called a few days ago.”

Ryuu freezes, his face pale. “That recently?”

“A couple times.” Shivering, I venture back to the couch and curl up with the blanket.

“So, when we went to the phone store…”

“I was changing my number.” I spring to my feet, blanket falling to the floor. “I need to call Detective Hara and give him my new contact information.”

I hurry around Ryuu and to the small closet next to the front door. My coat hangs next to Ryuu’s, and I shrug it on.

As I reach for the door handle, Ryuu’s large hand slaps against the hollow wood with a thump. “Where are you going?”

My tail whaps against his leg in irritation. “I just said I needed to call the Detective.”

Ryuu releases an exasperated sigh. “Why are you leaving to do that?”

“Because...” I search for a good reason and find none.

“I don’t like the idea of you being alone.” He tugs on the collar of my coat. “And since you don’t want me in your apartment, that means you call the detective from here.”

I grab my pack of cloves and my lighter from my pocket before he gets my jacket off. “You’re pushy, you know that?”

“It’s a good thing you like me already.” He thrusts my jacket back into the closet before leading me to the couch once more. With a tug on my arm, we settle side-by-side, our thighs pressed together.

Resigned, I set my smokes on the coffee table and pull up Detective Hara’s contact information in my phone. Ryuu stares hard at the number, as if committing it to memory, before I lift the phone to my ear. When Ryuu leans close, his horn pressing against my knuckles, I give up and put it on speaker.

After two rings, the detective picks up. “Hara speaking.
